CJI Gavai Today (Aug 4) permitted withdrawal of a plea against MNS chief Raj Thackeray for alleged hate speech targeting North Indians. Petitioner got liberty to approach the Bombay High Court.
The Supreme Court Today (July 25) declined to hear a plea seeking a criminal case against MNS chief Raj Thackeray for hate speeches targeting Hindi speakers. The petitioner has been allowed to approach the High Court instead.
Today, On 19th July, A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court against MNS chief Raj Thackeray, accusing him of inciting violence and spreading hatred against Hindi-speaking people amid the ongoing Marathi vs Hindi language controversy in Maharashtra.
Prominent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, recalled receiving a personal call from PM Modi, who warmly asked, “Should I speak in Hindi or Marathi?” during their conversation.
The Supreme Court upheld the use of Urdu on Maharashtra municipal signboards, saying that Urdu is a language of the people and not connected to any religion. The Court added that there is no legal issue with using Urdu alongside Marathi.
