NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday clarified that farm fires in Punjab are not the only reason behind Delhi’s air pollution problem during winter. While these farm fires do contribute to the city’s air quality issues, the Court directed the Punjab government to work with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to find better ways of managing agricultural waste.
The Supreme Court observed Today (Sept 11) that it was an important issue and posted the matter for hearing on September 18. The Court was hearing a batch of appeals against several decisions of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), all of which raised a common question of law.
The Supreme Court today reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh Government for delaying remission applications for convicts, criticizing the infringement of fundamental rights and warning of potential contempt proceedings. The Principal Secretary was directed to explain the delays and submit an affidavit, with the case set for another hearing on August 20.
Today, On 27th June, The Supreme Court imposed a Rs. 50,000 fine on Odisha for consistently filing appeals late, questioning the state’s practice. The court criticized the state for burdening the court and dismissed an appeal, while also questioning the frequency of delayed appeals from Odisha. Despite this, the court condoned a delay in another appeal.
