Gujarat High Court Bar urged CJI BR Gavai to transfer Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal, claiming her tenure caused major issues for lawyers and litigants. GHCAA President Brijesh Trivedi stated, “Main sufferers are litigants and Advocates especially juniors.”
Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna highlighted the importance of a strong Bar for an effective judiciary, advocating for a minimum stipend for junior lawyers to combat financial insecurity. He emphasized the essential role of lawyers in the justice system, the need for alternative dispute resolution, and collective responsibility in addressing legal challenges.
Supreme Court Justice Vikram Nath reaffirmed the ban on senior lawyers arguing cases during vacation sessions. He emphasized his authority, instructing senior lawyers to let their juniors argue and jokingly advised juniors not to pay seniors for hearing. This rule aims to provide juniors with more opportunities for experience during vacation hearings.
The Madras High Court said that senior lawyers not paying even a minimum stipend amount to the junior lawyers who work with them, amounts to exploitation and breaches the junior lawyers’ fundamental rights.
Today, On 20th May, The Supreme Court emphasized the need for junior lawyers to argue before vacation benches. This allows them to gain experience and advance professionally. The Court urged senior lawyers to support this initiative, highlighting the importance of providing opportunities for young legal professionals. Emphasis was also placed on the role of senior lawyers in mentoring and training junior members of the legal profession.
