Odisha: Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, while speaking at the Odisha Television Limited’s (OTV) annual convention ‘Foresight 2025—Changing Times Changing Minds’ in Bhubaneswar, highlighted the urgent need for judicial reforms and an All India Judicial Services (AIJS) system.
Mumbai: Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oka has strongly criticized the Maharashtra government for not providing basic infrastructure to the judiciary. He pointed out that the situation in neighboring Karnataka is very different. Justice Oka, who was earlier a judge in the Bombay High Court and later the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court, made these remarks at the Ashok Desai Memorial Lecture.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (Dec 18) emphasized that establishing Gram Nyayalayas cannot follow a nationwide formula due to varying state needs. It directed states to submit affidavits on judicial infrastructure in response to a plea advocating for enhanced access to justice. The court highlighted successful implementations in some states and scheduled follow-ups.
The Supreme Court of India acknowledged the significant pressure on judges, leading to inevitable errors, during a ruling on adverse remarks made against a Delhi judicial officer. Despite a target to raise the judge-to-population ratio to 50 per million by 2024, it remains below 25, highlighting the burden on the judiciary.
