The Supreme Court’s ruling on October 3 addressed caste discrimination in Indian prisons, asserting that Article 21 extends the right to life and personal liberty, including equality regardless of caste. The Court condemned systemic discrimination, called for reforms, and initiated oversight to ensure compliance with constitutional rights among inmates.
Delhi’s Patiala House Court allowed banned terrorist organisation Indian Mujahideen’s (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal to speak to his mother through video conferencing. In its order, the court also directed that Bhatkal would speak with his mother in Hindi only. The jail’s superintendent has also been allowed to get the communication recorded for security purposes.
“You want your sentence to be changed to hanging” – the Supreme Court asked Today (Sept 11) as Swamy Shraddananda, who is incarcerated for 30 years for killing his wife and has pleaded for release, said that the imprisonment till death awarded to him is far worse than the capital punishment. His wife was the grand-daughter of a former Dewan of the princely state of Mysore, sought the relief, saying he has been in “continuous incarceration” without any parole or remission and nothing adverse has been reported against him during his stay in jail.

The Supreme Court Today (Aug 27) adjourned hearing on the bail plea of former Aam Aadmi Party communication in-charge Vijay Nair in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. A bench of justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti deferred the matter after the counsel for the ED sought a weeks’ time for filing a counter affidavit.
