The Supreme Court of India on Thursday (6th Dec) set aside a National Green Tribunal order that fined M/s Govardhan Mines and Minerals Rs 3 crore for illegal stone mining in Haryana. The Chief Justice noted that the NGT did not adequately consider the mining company’s arguments, which were based on alleged inaccuracies in the committee’s report.
The Supreme Court, while hearing a plea against the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters Act, described it as “draconian.” Justices Gavai and Viswanathan admitted the appeal and pointed out the need for further consideration. Concerns were raised about civil liberties and misuse of the Act, which targets organized crime in Uttar Pradesh.
Today(on 20th July), The Enforcement Directorate arrested Congress MLA Surender Panwar in Gurugram for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Haryana. Panwar, 55, will appear before a special PMLA court in Ambala for a custodial remand.
