In Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a man accused of rape tried to run away from police custody. While being taken for a medical check-up, he asked to stop for a bathroom break. He then grabbed a policeman’s gun and fired at the police vehicle. In return, the police shot him in the leg, caught him again, and took him to the hospital.
A judicial commission investigating the Hathras stampede, which led to 121 deaths, has blamed administrative failures for the tragedy while also hinting at a possible conspiracy. The report highlighted that permission was given for 80,000 people, but the crowd swelled to over 2.5 lakh. Though it did not hold Bhole Baba personally responsible, it pointed to lapses by authorities and his ‘sevadars’ as key reasons behind the disaster.
The Allahabad High Court is addressing the 2024 Hathras stampede that resulted in 121 fatalities, requiring former District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police to explain their accountability. Justice Yadav criticized inadequate event planning, stressing administrative responsibility for safety measures, while highlighting overcrowding risks. The hearing is continued for further examination on January 15.
The Allahabad High Court instructed the Uttar Pradesh government to address the relocation request of the Hathras rape victim’s family for their safety. The court emphasized the urgency following delays since February 2024 and required a prompt response from the District Magistrate, with compliance to be assessed by January 2025.
