Today, On 17th September, The Supreme Court has revoked gangster Chhota Rajan’s bail in the 2001 murder case of hotelier Jaya Shetty, allowing the CBI’s appeal. The apex court questioned, “Why suspension of sentence to such a man?” highlighting strict accountability.
The Supreme Court on Thursday (5th Dec) set aside a Manipur High Court order requiring the CBI to locate a fugitive rape convict, deeming it unnecessary. The Court observed that the state had already formed a special team for this purpose, and the CBI’s involvement would duplicate efforts. The convict, Timothy L. Changsang, was previously convicted under the POCSO Act for multiple offenses.
Controversial preacher Zakir Naik retracted his plea today (23rd Oct) to consolidate hate speech FIRs during a Supreme Court hearing. The court questioned his right to petition while being a fugitive. Naik faces multiple investigations for promoting communal enmity and is believed to reside in Malaysia since leaving India in 2016.
The Bombay High Court summoned Mehul Choksi, a key accused in the PNB scam, to appear before the court. The court expressed concern about his absence and rejected his petitions, questioning his whereabouts. Choksi’s lawyer argued against his fugitive status, while the ED informed that proceedings to declare him a fugitive are ongoing. The court adjourned the hearing to August 12.
