Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai said that courts have forgotten the principle “bail is the rule, jail is the exception.” He recalled how he revived it in key 2024 cases involving Prabir Purkayastha, Manish Sisodia, and K Kavitha.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja Today (August 9th) accepted the bail bonds and surety bonds submitted by the advocates representing Manish Sisodia. The former deputy chief minister, who had been incarcerated for the past 17 months, is expected to be released today.
In a striking verdict Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan said the AAP leader was entitled to a “speedy trial” and that it would it be a “travesty of justice to send him back to a trial court. While allowing his bail plea in relation to the liquor policy case, the SC refused to restrain former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia from visiting Delhi Chief Minister’s office and/or the Delhi Secretariat.
