Today, On 4th February, The Gujarat government has formed a five-member committee to draft a proposal for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. This move aligns with the government’s aim to bring uniformity in personal laws across communities. The committee will study existing laws and suggest necessary reforms. The initiative follows similar efforts by other states to introduce UCC.
Senior Advocates Tushar Mehta and SCBA President Kapil Sibal met with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud to revisit the process governing the senior designation. They discussed concerns about the current criteria and proposed a revised approach involving judges observing identified lawyers for a year before a secret ballot. The meeting aimed for a comprehensive review, not the specific designation of individuals.
