Kerala: Today, 17th March, The Kerala High Court has quashed the Kerala government’s decision to appoint an inquiry commission to examine the rights of around 600 families facing eviction from Munambam land, which has been declared as waqf (an endowment under Islamic law for charitable or religious purposes).
The Supreme Court today directed the Central Government and Uttarakhand authorities to develop a rehabilitation policy for 4,365 families living near Haldwani Railway Station. The court emphasized the humane treatment of encroachers and criticized the Railways’ approach. It called for a balanced approach addressing long-term residents’ needs and specified measures for identifying land and relocating families.
The Supreme Court dismissed today, a contempt petition against Manipur authorities for failing to protect the properties of displaced persons during recent violence. The court stated that no contempt was made, emphasizing the need to involve encroachers as parties to the case before taking action. Encroachments on properties should be addressed through separate proceedings.
