The Rohini District Court in Delhi has sentenced a man, who was a minor when he committed the crime, to life imprisonment for the 2017 rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl. The court determined that the individual was over 16 years old at the time of the offense, which allowed him to be tried as an adult. Special Judge (POCSO) Sushil Bala Dagar not only handed down the life sentence but also imposed a fine on the convicted individual. Additionally, the judge directed that compensation be provided to the victim’s family as part of the ruling.
The Kerala High Court ordered 28 lawyers to provide free legal services as a remedy for their contempt of court, after they apologized for shouting abusive slogans against a Chief Judicial Magistrate. The court found their apology insufficient and proposed this measure, which the lawyers accepted while ensuring their right to practice law.
The Allahabad High Court criticized the District Legal Services Authority and the trial court for failing to ensure the release of Beeru Kumar, an undertrial prisoner granted bail last year. Kumar remained in jail for almost a year due to an inability to provide required sureties. The court emphasized the need for better oversight and assistance for undertrials to prevent extended unlawful detentions.
