The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will submit a progress report on the investigation into the gruesome rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the Supreme Court Today (Aug 22). A bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra heard the case on Tuesday (August 20) after taking up the matter on its own. The brutal rape and murder of the 31-year-old postgraduate doctor has sparked nationwide outrage and protests.
A doctors’ association Today (Aug 21) moved the Supreme Court seeking interim protection for doctors till the recommendations of the National Task Force (NTF) constituted by the Court are implemented. Seeking intervention in the ongoing proceedings before the apex court, the plea filed by Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) contended that doctors have often been subjected to alleged instances of violence and threat to their safety and security.

“Please trust us,” the Supreme Court said Today (Aug 20th) while requesting the doctors protesting across the country over a Kolkata doctor’s alleged rape and killing to call off the strike and resume work. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud Today (Aug 20) expressed deep concerns at the fact that the name of the victim, photographs and video clips showing the dead body have been spread all over the media. “This is extremely concerning,” CJI said. The Court ordered the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to provide security to the hospital and the hostel. Kapil Sibal said that the State has no objection to this.
The Supreme Court Today (Aug 20) said to the Bengal government that the power of the state should not be “unleashed on the protesters” in connection with the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. “We will indicate our broad parameters of our intervention. Let not the power of state of West Bengal be unleashed on peaceful protesters. Whether doctors, or civil society, let there not be power of state be unleashed on them at all,” CJI Chandrachud said.
