NEW DELHI: On February 17, 2025, the Coordination Committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi made a unanimous decision to oppose the proposed Advocate Amendment Bill 2025. The committee has called for a complete strike from judicial work on Monday, February 19, 2025, in all District Courts across Delhi.
The Supreme Court of India today (7th Jan) clarified that a 10-year experience requirement does not apply to the Treasurer’s post reserved for women in district bar associations. This clarification follows previous orders aimed at implementing a 33% quota for women in various legal bodies, highlighting the need for increased female representation.
The Supreme Court issued a notice regarding a plea challenging the “one member, one post” rule for Delhi bar associations, which was upheld by the Delhi High Court. The rule mandates that all bar association elections in Delhi be conducted simultaneously and prohibits lawyers from contesting or holding multiple posts across different bar bodies. The next hearing is scheduled for September 9.
On July 15, the Union Home Ministry agreed to suspend provisions in newly passed criminal laws requiring evidence to be recorded via video conferencing from police stations, following protests from Delhi’s bar associations. The legal community in Delhi plans to submit a representation to the government, expressing concerns about all three criminal laws enacted this year.
