With just six working days left before incumbent Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s retires on November 10, HS Jaggi, the Registrar (Technology) of the Supreme Court, on Thursday (Oct 24) explained to SC correspondents the working of the apex court’s War Room which was inaugurated on August 23, 2024, by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. It is equipped with technology that allows the court to monitor judicial data in real-time across the country.

Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) , was appointed by President Droupadi Murmu in November 2022, succeeding Uday Umesh Lalit. Son of former Chief Justice Y.V. Chandrachud, he became a Supreme Court judge in May 2016. Prior to this, he served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court (2013–2016) and as a judge at the Bombay High Court (2000–2013).

CJI Chandrachud Recalls 2022 Judgment on Benami Transactions Act, Citing ‘Lack of Constitutional Challenge’

The Supreme Court Today (Oct 18) recalled its 2022 judgment that struck down certain provisions of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 1988 and 2016 amendments to it. The CJI Led Bench allowed the review petition filed by the Central government against the top court’s August 22 judgment. The Court said there was no challenge to the provisions of the unamended Act and the issue of constitutional validity was not addressed in the decision. It recalled the judgment and restored the original case for hearing before a new bench.
