Volkswagen has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against a $1.4 billion customs duty demand, which it claims is excessive. The customs department alleged misclassification of imports, charging lower duties than applicable for CKD units. The court’s decision could significantly impact Volkswagen and the automobile industry in India.
Today, On 11th July, The Allahabad High Court Bar Association passed a resolution to stop addressing judges as “My Lord” or “Your Lordship,” stressing that judges are not deities. The decision led to a strike, and non-compliance will result in disciplinary measures including termination of membership. The strike is extended, and the meeting attendees discussed further actions and resolutions.
The Supreme Court asked the Centre to furnish details of issuance of notices and arrests done under the provisions of the Goods and Services Tax, saying it may interpret the law and lay down appropriate guidelines to avoid any harassment of citizens by depriving their liberty.
