Today(3rd August), Union Minister Chirag Paswan opposed the Supreme Court’s ruling allowing states to create sub-groups within Scheduled Castes for the 15% quota and announced his party, the Lok Janshakti Party, will appeal. Paswan also supported a caste census, as demanded by Rahul Gandhi, but stressed that the results should not be made public.
Today, On 1st August, The Supreme Court of India emphasized the need for a refined policy to identify the “creamy layer” within the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities. Justice Bhushan Gavai suggested reevaluating the methods for fair distribution of affirmative action benefits. The court ruled 6:1 in favor of subclassification within SC/ST reservation, allowing it to stand.

The Supreme Court today declined to stay the Patna High Court’s ruling that annulled the increase in reservation for Backward Classes, Extremely Backward Classes, and Scheduled Castes and Tribes (SC/STs) in Bihar from 50% to 65% in public employment and educational institutions. The final hearing is scheduled for September, with no interim relief granted.
