The Supreme Court today (25th Oct) denied former Jharkhand CM Madhu Koda’s plea to stay his 2017 conviction for corruption in a coal scam, preventing him from contesting the upcoming assembly elections. The Delhi High Court previously ruled against staying the conviction, reinforcing the decision that Koda cannot hold public office until fully acquitted.
The Supreme Court criticized the Patna High Court’s comments about a widow and make-up articles in a 1985 murder case, calling them “highly objectionable.” The Supreme Court stated that the remarks lacked sensitivity and evidence, highlighting that no definitive proof linked the victim to the house or supported motive for the crime. All seven accused were acquitted.
The Delhi High Court convicted Advocate Sanjay Rathod for appearing intoxicated before a magistrate and issuing threats against her. The court found his behavior to be contemptuous and unacceptable, but as he had already served five months in jail for related charges, no further sentence was imposed. The incident occurred in 2015 at the Karkardooma Court.
The Supreme Court has today issued a notice to the Gujarat Government regarding former police officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s appeal against his conviction and life sentence in a 1990 custodial death case. The court in Uttar Pradesh has ordered the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh and other accused for missing a hearing in a 20-year-old case. On Thursday(6th June),Former Punjab Police officials, DIG Dilbagh Singh and DSP Gurbachan Singh, were convicted in a 1993 fake encounter case by Judge RK Gupta in Mohali, marking 31 years since the incident. The Supreme Court ordered an interim stay on the arrest of former DGP Rajesh Das following his appeal seeking suspension of sentence and exemption from surrender. Das was convicted for sexually harassing a woman IPS officer during an election campaign. The decision was made after the Madras High Court dismissed his pleas.
