Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud Today (April 8th) expressed worry at the practice of High Courts keeping matters reserved for judgment for unusually long periods.
Today (April 5th), CJI DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, granted the Central government’s request to transfer petitions from various High Courts. These petitions challenge notices issued by Goods and Services Tax (GST) authorities to gaming companies for alleged tax evasion and underpayment. A total of 27 petitions from 9-HC’s were transferred to SC.
The CJI led bench of Supreme Court Today criticized Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi for refusing to reinstate a DMK leader into the state cabinet despite the court staying his conviction. The court emphasized the governor’s obligation to implement its orders and expressed intent to take serious action if the situation does not improve, adjourning the proceedings to the following day.
“Are judges special? No, we are not.”: CJI DY Chandrachud, expressed concern over the declining adherence to the “bail is the rule, and jail is the exception” principle in district courts. He called for an evaluation of this trend, emphasizing the need for the district judiciary to prioritize personal liberty and address infrastructure challenges. Justice Khanna emphasized the societal responsibility of judges.
