“A journalist’s work does not just inform; it fortifies the very foundation of democracy,” said former Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Wednesday. He spoke at the 25th Business Standard-Seema Nazareth Award for Excellence in Journalism, 2024 about how journalism plays a crucial role in society. While delivering the keynote address on the topic “Journalism as the mainstay of democracy,” Chandrachud highlighted the importance of journalists in keeping people informed.
Former CJI DY Chandrachud highlights India’s shift from millet-rich traditional diets to carb-heavy Western foods as a major driver of rising diabetes cases. Speaking at the launch of Diabetes No More by Dr. K Bhujang Shetty, he shared personal stories and stressed the power of dietary and lifestyle changes, like low-carb and vegan diets, in reversing diabetes. He urged a return to balanced living, including traditional foods, exercise, stress management, and breastfeeding, to promote long-term health.
Former Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud dismissed claims about excessive vacations in the Supreme Court, emphasizing that judges work tirelessly year-round, including weekends and holidays. He highlighted that even during breaks, judges manage critical cases, deliver judgments, and engage in legal outreach, debunking the misconception of a leisurely life.

During the 10th edition of the India Economic Conclave (IEC) held at Bharat Mandapam, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud delved into critical issues surrounding the Indian judiciary. Including the Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s suicide case and reflections on his tenure as the Chief Justice of India. “Particularly when human relations are involved, as in the case of a spousal conflict, it’s very difficult for us sitting in the course of a platform like this which actually deduce as to what happened between them at that particular point of time.”
Former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud clarified that his previous comments on prayer in relation to the Ayodhya dispute were misconstrued. He emphasized that his faith does not influence legal judgments and highlighted the importance of impartiality in judicial roles.
