Supreme Court Slams Trial Court For Delay To Commence Trial In 2016 Case: “Breach Of The Procedure Established By Law”

The Supreme Court Yesterday (Dec 13) expressed its strong disapproval at a trial court’s failure to frame charges and commence trial in a case of attempt to murder dating back to 2016. A Bench of Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra granted bail to a man in custody since April 2017 in a case registered by Maharashtra Police in December 2016.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court stated that a Sessions Court possesses the authority to revoke bail granted by the High Court to an accused, particularly in cases where there are supervening circumstances such as the breach of release conditions.

CJI Led Bench Halts Land Clearance for Silchar Greenfield Airport

Today (6th May): The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Chandrachud, has halted land clearance for the proposed Silchar Greenfield Airport. The Court found that authorities violated the 2006 EIA notification by conducting extensive clearance without proper environmental clearance. The NGT was criticized for dismissing the plea without verification, and the Court directed no further action until an EIA report is available.
