The Supreme Court today declined to stay the Patna High Court’s ruling that annulled the increase in reservation for Backward Classes, Extremely Backward Classes, and Scheduled Castes and Tribes (SC/STs) in Bihar from 50% to 65% in public employment and educational institutions. The final hearing is scheduled for September, with no interim relief granted.
The Supreme Court directed all states to complete migrant laborer verification for ration cards within four weeks, warning of consequences for non-compliance. Only Bihar and Telangana completed 100% verification. The court also criticized delays in distributing rations and instructed the Centre to release food grains to compliant states. Previously, the court instructed ration card issuance within two months for registered laborers.
Today, On 16th July, The CBI arrested an engineer for the NEET paper leak, tracing it to Hazaribagh. The investigation revealed tampering with question papers at Oasis school, leading to the arrest of two individuals. The CBI has filed multiple FIRs and arrested around 60 people in connection with irregularities in the medical entrance exam, prompting concerns about the exam’s integrity and potential retesting.
Complaint lodged by a Hindu outfit leader; Sections 299, 302 and 356 (1) of newly-notified BNS has been imposed in the case; next hearing on July 15. A complaint has been filed in Bihar against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition of Lok Sabha, on July 2 over his recent remark on Hindus in Parliament. Divyanshu Kishore, a Hindu outfit leader, filed the case in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court of Muzaffarpur.
The Delhi High Court advised the petitioner to withdraw the election challenge against Chirag Paswan’s Lok Sabha win and approach the jurisdictional high court in Bihar. The court expressed doubts about the case’s maintainability in Delhi, given that the constituency is in Bihar. It scheduled a hearing for August 28. The petitioner alleged sexual assault and challenged Paswan’s nomination.
