NEW DELHI: The Bar Council of India (BCI) strongly criticized the growing trend of advocates promoting their services through social media, promotional videos, and influencer endorsements. In a press release issued on March 17, the BCI warned against such practices and emphasized that they violate the ethical standards of the legal profession.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) issued a strong warning against the spread of fake news regarding a lawyers’ strike on February 12, 2025. The BCI clarified that no such strike has been called and that false information is being circulated to mislead lawyers and tarnish the reputation of its Chairman, Manan Kumar Mishra. It has announced plans to file an FIR against those responsible and urged lawyers not to believe or share such misleading posts on social media.
The Bombay High Court Today (Feb 10) refused to hear a PIL challenging the Bar Council of India’s (BCI) rule requiring law students to undergo criminal background checks before receiving their final marksheets. Advocate Ashok Yende argued that the rule violates privacy and is beyond BCI’s powers. However, the Court stated that having a criminal case does not prevent students from pursuing legal education. The matter is also pending before the Supreme Court.

The court and petitioner acknowledged this stance, emphasizing the necessity for advocates to focus solely on their legal responsibilities to maintain professional integrity and public trust.

The BCI has sought a CBI investigation into alleged record tampering, raising legal and political concerns about Nasiar’s qualifications.
