Allahabad: 5th May, The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that had claimed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi holds citizenship of both India and the United Kingdom (UK). The PIL had alleged that because of this, he is not qualified to be a Member of Parliament under Article 84(A) of the Indian Constitution, which mentions the conditions for eligibility to contest Lok Sabha elections.
The Delhi High Court today has decided to treat Subramanian Swamy’s petition regarding Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship as a public interest litigation (PIL). The case will be sent to the PIL roster bench, but no comments have been made on the merits of the case. Swamy alleges violations by Rahul Gandhi and requests the Ministry of Home Affairs to review the cancellation of his Indian citizenship.
The Delhi High Court has been petitioned by BJP’s Subramanian Swamy to revoke Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship. This stems from concerns over his alleged roles in a UK company, where he reportedly declared himself as a British national. The matter will be heard in the coming week. The Ministry of Home Affairs is yet to disclose any decision despite seeking clarification in 2019.
