The Supreme Court called the delay in execution of 8.8 lakh pending petitions “highly disappointing and nothing short of a travesty of justice.” It pulled up the High Courts, urging them to expedite the disposal of these cases.
Over 1.20 lakh cases are pending in the Delhi High Court, mainly due to judge shortage worsened by recent transfers and retirements. Justice Kathpalia’s bench called the situation “extremely distressing,” as many appeals remain unheard for years.
The Supreme Court criticized the Madhya Pradesh High Court for wrongly rejecting a convict’s bail request based on unfounded legal reasoning. The apex court granted bail, highlighting the delays in appeal hearings and stating that established legal principles should guide bail decisions, not arbitrary rules about serving part of a sentence.

The Bench, comprising Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra, highlighted the prolonged incarceration of the lawyer’s client, emphasizing the need for prompt justice.
The Chief Justice of India (CJI), Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Today (December 10), announced a change in the scheduling of case hearings at the Supreme Court. He stated that “regular matters will now be listed from January 2025 onwards considering the ‘huge pendency in the after-notice matters’.”
The entire judiciary is facing the problem of pendency and backlog of cases, and efficient functioning of the district judiciary is crucial in mitigating these challenges, Justice Sanjiv Khanna of the Supreme Court said Today (Aug 31). Speaking here at the ‘National Conference of the District Judiciary’, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice Khanna said the image of the judiciary for the common public is projected by the district court judges as mostly the citizens come in contact with these judges as parties or as witnesses.
