NEW DELHI: Today, 4th Feb, The Supreme Court strongly criticized the Assam government for not deporting people who have already been declared as foreigners. The court questioned whether the state was waiting for a “muhurat” (auspicious time) to take action.
The Gauhati High Court has instructed the Assam government to respond within four weeks to a petition challenging the constitutionality of the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Act, 2024. The petitioner seeks the restoration of the repealed 1935 Act, claiming the new law violates constitutional rights and negatively impacts the Muslim community’s marriage practices.
Today, On 4th October, the Supreme Court directed the Assam Legal Services Authority to conduct surprise inspections at the Matia Transit Camp for detainees pending deportation. The court is concerned about hygiene, food quality, and detainees’ rights, ordering a report on the conditions within one month, with further hearings set for November 4.
