NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday (14th Feb) addressed a petition filed by some lawyers from Karnataka, who are seeking reservation for lawyers from marginalized communities in bar bodies. The Court acknowledged that this was an important matter but also made it clear that while diversity in bar bodies is necessary, they do not want these bodies to become divided along caste or religious lines.
Senior Advocate Indira Jaising urged the Supreme Court to grant lawyers access to the exclusive Judges’ Library, revealing that her past requests had been ignored. Highlighting financial struggles in keeping up with legal publications, she even requested Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to support the cause. Justice Oka’s lighthearted response—”He has agreed”—and Mehta’s brief “Yes, yes” sparked laughter in the courtroom, making the moment go viral.
The Supreme Court today (23rd Oct) has sought an affidavit from Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena regarding alleged illegal tree felling for the CAPFIMS project. Saxena stated he was unaware that court permission was needed, citing prior approvals from the Delhi government. He emphasized that officials may have misinterpreted these approvals, acting in good faith.
