New Delhi, Feb 24 – The Supreme Court suggested that the central government consider changing the terminology used in caste certificates for Scheduled Caste (SC) individuals. However, the court emphasized that their rights should remain unchanged. A bench consisting of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh acknowledged that the final decision rests with Parliament but said that modifying the nomenclature could help prevent individuals from being identified by caste names.
The Supreme Court On Monday (2nd Dec), directed the Election Commission of India to file an affidavit regarding its decision to increase the number of voters per polling booth to 1,500. Concerns about voter efficiency and convenience were raised during the proceedings, and the Court emphasized that no voter should face inconvenience due to this change.
The Supreme Court Today (Oct 21) sought the response of the Union government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) to a plea challenging uncontested elections when there is only one candidate contesting the election. The petition contends that rules allowing the same prevent voters from rejecting the sole candidate using the NOTA option.
