The Supreme Court judges expressed anger over the chaotic and unprofessional behaviour displayed by lawyers in the courtroom, likening it to a fish market. Despite Chief Justice of India’s efforts to instil decorum and discipline, his teachings proved ineffective. The judges’ frustration highlights ongoing issues with courtroom conduct and the need for stricter enforcement of professional standards among lawyers.

New Delhi: Last week, Justice Kumar also expressed frustration with young lawyers in a similar case, where one lawyer persistently refuted the arguments and facts presented by the opposing counsel.

This week, the situation escalated during a hearing before the vacation bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and Sandeep Mehta. As the lawyers engaged in a heated exchange, loudly talking over one another, the bench became agitated. In an exasperated tone, one of the judges sharply questioned whether the courtroom behaving more like a “fish market” than a court of law.

The report highlights the tensions that can arise when lawyers engage in confrontational tactics, rather than making their case through proper legal channels. The judges’ reactions highlights their expectation of decorum and professionalism in the proceedings before them, even during the court’s summer recess when urgent matters being addressed.

Justice Arvind Kumar, expressing his displeasure in a stern manner, remarked to the two young lawyers,

“Is this the Supreme Court or a fish market? Show some decency. Young lawyers should take a cue from their seniors on how to conduct themselves in court.”

Last week, Justice Kumar also expressed his frustration with young lawyers in a comparable case. When one lawyer persistently interrupted and challenged the arguments and facts presented by the opposing lawyer, Justice Kumar reprimanded the younger lawyer.

Justice Kumar remarked,

“Such conduct before the Supreme Court is unprecedented. With these disruptive tactics and commotion, you aim to secure orders from this court. This is unacceptable.”

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice DY Chandrachud repeatedly urged senior lawyers in the Supreme Court to allow junior lawyers to step forward and present cases before the bench, fostering the development of the new generation of legal professionals. The CJI frequently praised junior lawyers in the courtroom, personally ensuring their seating arrangements and observing court proceedings from his place.
