Tamil Nadu SIR: Supreme Court to Hear Plea Challenging Voter Roll Revision on December 2

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India agreed to hear a petition challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being carried out in Tamil Nadu by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The plea has been filed by MDMK leader Vaiko, who argues that the ECI’s decision could lead to irregularities in voter data and disenfranchisement of eligible voters.

The matter was taken up by a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

After briefly hearing submissions, CJI Surya Kant issued notice in the matter and directed that the case be listed for final consideration on December 2, noting that dasti service will also be permitted.

“Issue notice. Matter will be taken up on December 2. Dasti service as well.”

However, the bench declined the request, stating that the two cases raise different legal issues.

“Kerala and Tamil Nadu involve separate questions. There may be some overlap, but this one will be heard on December 2.”
