The Supreme Court has dismissed petitions against Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin regarding his controversial remarks at the Sanatana Eradication Conference. His comparison of Sanatana Dharma to diseases sparked outrage, leading to calls for legal action. The court ruled the petitions unfit for hearing, concluding legal proceedings against him.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed a case filed against Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and others regarding their participation in the Sanatana Eradication Conference, organized by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ Association in Chennai.
The petitions, filed by three individuals, including Jaganathan, sought to challenge Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks on Sanatana Dharma, which were made during the conference held on September 2, 2023. The hearing, led by a bench headed by Justice Bella Dwivedi, concluded with the Supreme Court ruling that the petition was not fit for admission.
During the Sanatana Eradication Conference, Udhayanidhi Stalin compared Sanatana Dharma to diseases like dengue, malaria, and COVID-19, stating that it was against social justice and should be eradicated. His comments triggered widespread controversy and condemnation, particularly from the BJP and other Hindutva organizations across the country.
Despite the backlash, Udhayanidhi stood firm on his remarks, saying that he believed in the need to eradicate systems and ideologies that perpetuate inequality. Following his speech, cases were registered in multiple states against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
Three petitioners, including Jaganathan, approached the Supreme Court, seeking to declare Udhayanidhi’s speech as unconstitutional and demanding the registration of an FIR against him. Senior advocate P. Wilson, who represented the respondents, objected to the petition being admitted for hearing.
The bench, led by Justice Bella Dwivedi, reviewed the arguments and decided to dismiss the petitions, ruling them unfit for hearing. The dismissal effectively puts an end to legal proceedings against Udhayanidhi Stalin concerning his speech at the conference.
The Sanatana Eradication Conference, organized by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association, aimed to address issues of social justice and caste-based inequality. However, the remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin during the event were interpreted by many as inflammatory, sparking debates across political and social platforms.
Despite the controversies, Udhayanidhi has maintained his stance, asserting that his comments were aimed at promoting equality and eradicating oppressive systems.
