New Delhi – 29th April: The Supreme Court of India has taken serious steps against delays in housing construction projects across the country. It has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into possible wrongdoing between some real estate builders and banks.
This investigation will cover major cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Mohali, and Kolkata.
During a hearing on Tuesday, a Supreme Court bench led by Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh gave orders to the CBI to begin seven preliminary enquiries (PEs).
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) will also be formed to look into the matter more deeply.
To support the CBI’s efforts, the Supreme Court directed the Directors General of Police (DGPs) of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to send police officers who will assist the CBI team.
One of the real estate companies named in this case is Supertech. The Supreme Court said that the CBI must conduct a preliminary probe into housing projects located in Noida, Greater Noida, Yamuna Expressway, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad—all part of the Delhi-NCR region.
The bench said that the top court itself will keep a close eye on the investigation and hear the case every month to make sure the probe moves ahead properly.
An official order from the court stated: “CBI shall register seven preliminary enquiries (PE) and constitute a special investigation team (SIT).”
The bench also stated: “We request the DGPs of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to provide officers to the CBI for assisting the investigation team.”
The court said that not only will Supertech be investigated, but other builders who have ongoing or incomplete projects in Mumbai, Chandigarh, Mohali, and Kolkata will also be part of this probe. The CBI has been instructed to give an interim status report on how the investigation is progressing.
