Supreme Court Sends Notice to MCC, NMC Over NEET-PG Counselling Irregularities: Seat Blocking Allegations Raised

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday sent a notice to the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), the Central Government, and the National Medical Commission (NMC) regarding a petition that raised concerns about problems in the third round of counselling for All India Quota (AIQ) seats.

These seats are for students who appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-PG, which is the exam for admissions to postgraduate medical colleges in India.

A team of judges, including Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, asked the MCC, NMC, and the Central Government to provide their response to the petition.

The petition mentioned that there were cases where AIQ seats were blocked in the third round of counselling even before the second round of State-level counselling was completed in some states like Madhya Pradesh.

Because of this seat blocking, many deserving candidates were unable to register for the seats that should have been available to them. The petitioners stated that this unfair practice led to students missing out on better seats.

The petition also said that many candidates had to settle for seats in lower-preference branches instead of getting the branches they truly wanted, which happened because of these irregularities.

Additionally, the plea accused the authorities of not following the timeline set by the Supreme Court for NEET seat allocation, referring to cases like the Anjana Chari case.

The petitioners were represented in court by Senior Advocate K Parameshwar and Advocate Tanvi Dubey.
