Sippy Sidhu murder case, accused Kalyani Singh has approached the Supreme Court, urging the apex court to intervene and restrain the trial court from proceeding with the ongoing hearings. The case, originally under the jurisdiction of the UT police, was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2016, and Kalyani was arrested in June 2022, subsequently charged with the murder of national-level shooter Sukhmanpreet Singh alias Sippy Sidhu.

During the hearing before the special CBI court on Friday, where Kalyani Singh filed an application seeking an adjournment of the proceedings. The court was informed that the matter is currently sub judice before the Supreme Court, with an Special Leave Petition (SLP) (Criminal) Diary scheduled for February 23, 2024.

Quoting the legal representatives, the trial court revealed,

“The proceedings are pending before the Supreme Court in SLP (Criminal) Diary for February 23, filed on behalf of Kalyani Singh.”

The incident occurred on September 20, 2015, when Sippy Sidhu, a national-level shooter and lawyer, was shot dead at Sector 27 park. The victim’s family has alleged that Kalyani Singh, the daughter of former Punjab and Haryana high court judge justice Sabina (retd), is responsible for the murder, claiming that she took this extreme step after her marriage proposal was rejected.

Originally investigated by the UT police, the case took a turn in 2016 when it was handed over to the CBI. Subsequently, in June 2022, Kalyani Singh was arrested and charged with murder by the investigating agency.

In defense, Kalyani Singh filed an application before the CBI court, requesting access to all documents relied upon by the prosecution, statements of witnesses, and electronic data collected. The trial court, however, rejected the application, citing that the requested documents were not relied upon in the proceedings.

Challenging this decision, Kalyani Singh appealed to the High Court, which on May 8, 2023, directed the trial court to defer the framing of charges until the necessary data was provided to her. Nevertheless, the CBI contested this decision and moved to the Supreme Court, resulting in a stay on the High Court’s order on December 1, 2023.

The Supreme Court allowed the CBI court to proceed but said charges would depend on the final case outcome. Kalyani Singh filed a request on February 6, 2024, asking the Supreme Court to modify its December 1, 2023 order, stressing urgency as the trial court was moving ahead while the matter was still pending in the apex court.

The next Supreme Court hearing is scheduled for February 23, 2024.
