Supreme Court Hints Delhi's Government Change Could Resolve Yamuna Disputes, BJP Rolls Out Cleanup Plan

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday remarked that the change in government in Delhi might “solve all disputes” surrounding the Yamuna River, including cleaning pollution and ensuring a fair water supply from Haryana.

The top court had taken suo motu cognisance of Yamuna-related issues in January 2021 and has since issued periodic orders. The comment from Justice B.R. Gavai came as amicus curiae Meenakshi Arora discussed the dispute between the Delhi and Haryana governments over water supply and pollution.

“… but now, with the change of government, all disputes might get resolved. In these changed circumstances, better implementation may be possible,”

Justice Gavai said.

The hearing addressed concerns about Yamuna’s pollution and equitable water sharing between Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. Previously, the BJP controlled only Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, while Delhi was under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). However, after BJP’s sweeping victory in Delhi, all three states are now under its rule, which the Supreme Court suggested might aid in resolving the Yamuna issue.

The BJP’s Delhi campaign had heavily criticized former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for failing to clean the Yamuna, a promise he made before the 2020 Delhi elections. The party also accused AAP of spreading false claims about Haryana’s water quality, with Kejriwal alleging that Haryana was mixing “poison” into Yamuna water supplied to Delhi. Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Saini countered these claims by publicly drinking Yamuna water, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed Kejriwal’s accusations as “disgusting.”

Following its electoral victory, the BJP has pledged to clean the Yamuna. Last week, the party rolled out a three-year cleanup plan, deploying machines to clear biological and plastic waste from the river’s surface. The government has also initiated a crackdown on industrial units dumping untreated sewage into the river.

In his victory speech, PM Modi emphasized the Yamuna issue, chanting “Yamuna ki jai” and stating, “People of Delhi have been crying after seeing the condition of Yamuna…”

With the BJP now in power in all three states responsible for Yamuna’s health, hopes are high for a coordinated effort to finally clean the river and resolve long-standing disputes.
