The Supreme Court also directed both the Central and Delhi governments to file Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) challenging several acquittals in riot-related cases. These acquittals had previously been upheld by the Delhi High Court.

This directive was issued during a hearing conducted on Monday by a Bench comprising Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan.
The Supreme Court also directed both the Central and Delhi governments to file Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) challenging several acquittals in riot-related cases. These acquittals had previously been upheld by the Delhi High Court.
The Court scheduled the next hearing for March 25, 2025.
Background of the Case
The ongoing hearing is based on a plea filed in 2016 by S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon, who sought a detailed probe into 51 murder cases that occurred during the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots in Delhi. Following Kahlon’s petition, the Supreme Court had established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Justice S.N. Dhingra to re-examine 186 cases that had been reopened concerning the riots. These riots had tragically resulted in numerous deaths.
During the recent hearing, the Court acknowledged that the Delhi High Court Registry had submitted a report in line with its February order. However, it noted that the Registry had not provided a status update on the four pending suo moto revision petitions. Consequently, the Bench directed the Registry to “file a progress report in this regard.“
Senior Advocate H.S. Phoolka, along with Advocates Amarjeet Singh Bedi, Gaganmeet Singh Sachdeva, and Varun Chugh, represented the petitioner, S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon.
In the previous hearing held on February 17, the Supreme Court had emphasized the need for prompt filing of SLPs.
The Court stated, “Considering the fact that this Bench is seized of Writ Petition (Crl.) No.9 of 2016, the SLPs shall be placed before Hon’ble.”
It further directed, “We direct the State of Delhi to ensure that SLPs in aforesaid cases are filed within a maximum period of six weeks from today.”
