The Supreme Court of India granted bail to Pawan Bishnoi and co-accused Jagtar Singh in the murder case of Sidhu Moosewala, considering arguments about alleged logistical support and reconnaissance linked to the crime.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court granted bail to Pawan Bishnoi, one of the accused in the 2022 murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. A Bench consisting of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta also approved bail for co-accused Jagtar Singh, who is alleged to have assisted in conducting reconnaissance of Moosewala’s residence.

Pawan Bishnoi is said to be affiliated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and is accused of providing logistical support for the execution of Moosewala’s murder. The Court provided bail after considering arguments regarding his alleged involvement in arranging the vehicle used in the crime.

Moosewala, 28, was killed by assailants in May 2022 while driving his sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Punjab. Investigators have alleged that members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang were implicated in the murder, which was claimed by gangster Goldy Brar, a close associate of Lawrence Bishnoi.

During the hearing, Pawan Bishnoi’s counsel contended that the accusations against him were confined to arranging a Bolero vehicle allegedly used in the crime.

The counsel stated,

“The allegation against me is that I (Pawan Bishnoi) provided the Bolero which was used in the crime,”

The Bench remarked that it might be safer for Bishnoi to remain incarcerated.

They noted,

“It’s for your own safety that you should remain in jail,”

Bishnoi’s counsel insisted that his client had no ties to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

He said,

“Only my title matches. I don’t have any other relation with Lawrence Bishnoi,”

The State opposed the bail application, asserting that Bishnoi had received 41 calls from co-accused individuals regarding the arrangement of the vehicle used in the murder. In response, the counsel for Bishnoi pointed out that others allegedly supplied weapons but had not been charged, emphasizing that no recovery had been made from his client.

The lawyer maintained,

“My role is limited. It has been three years and ten months since I am inside. I am seeking regular bail,”

The Court also inquired about how mobile phones were being used from within the prison, reacting to the State’s claims that there were several calls exchanged between the accused and co-accused during the crime’s planning phase.

The Bench asked,

“How were mobile phones used in jail? Are your jail authorities also in conspiracy? What’s the stage of trial?”

The State replied that the case is currently in the evidence-recording phase, with protected witnesses already having testified against the accused.

During the hearing regarding Jagtar Singh’s plea, his counsel argued that the cameras situated near Moosewala’s residence were installed for the security of his own home, not for reconnaissance.

After considering all arguments, the Court ultimately granted bail to both accused.
