The Supreme Court has paused the murder trial of Rabia Saifi, a former Delhi civil defence volunteer, and requested responses from the Haryana and Delhi governments, Delhi Police, and CBI. Saifi’s father, Sameed Ahmad, seeks a CBI probe, alleging a conspiracy to cover up corruption related to COVID-19 enforcement. The case raises significant concerns about judicial integrity.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday (Nov 25th) stayed the murder trial concerning the death of former Delhi civil defence volunteer Rabia Saifi and sought responses from the Haryana government, Delhi government, Delhi Police, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Prasanna B Varale issued the directive while hearing an appeal filed by Sameed Ahmad, Rabia’s father, challenging a July 3 order by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Advocates Mehmood Pracha, RHA Sikander, Jatin Bhatt, Sanawar, and Nuzhat Naseem appeared on behalf of Ahmad, who has sought an independent, court-monitored CBI probe into his daughter’s murder.

Ahmad alleged that Rabia’s murder was part of a “larger conspiracy” aimed at suppressing evidence of “rampant corruption” among Delhi civil defence personnel, who were tasked with enforcing COVID-19 regulations. He also claimed the post-mortem report deliberately concealed injuries, pointing to a cover-up.

In November 2021, Ahmad approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking a CBI inquiry, but his plea was dismissed as infructuous since the trial court had already framed charges. This prompted him to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The apex court’s stay halts further trial proceedings and paves the way for a detailed response from all parties involved. The matter is under active consideration, with broader implications for justice in the case and the alleged conspiracy.
