NEW DELHI: Justice Sanjiv Khanna took the oath of office as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday(11th Nov). He succeeds Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday. Justice Khanna’s tenure as CJI will last until May 13, 2025. He will serve as the 51st CJI for the next six months before his own retirement.
The Centre formally announced Justice Khanna’s appointment on October 24, following a recommendation by Chief Justice Chandrachud on October 16. Justice Chandrachud’s final working day as CJI was Friday, and he was given a warm farewell by judges, lawyers, and staff from the Supreme Court and high courts.

A member of a distinguished Delhi family, Justice Khanna is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and the nephew of former Supreme Court judge HR Khanna. Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court, he had a long career as a lawyer and was appointed as a High Court judge.
Justice Khanna took the oath of office in accordance with the Constitution, under Part 4 of the Third Schedule, at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at 10 am.
The CJI’s oath reads: “I, (Name), having been appointed Chief Justice (or a Judge) of the Supreme Court of India (or Comptroller and Auditor-General of India) do swear in the name of God/solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India, that I will duly and faithfully, to the best of my ability, knowledge and judgment, perform the duties of my office without fear or favour, affection or ill-will, and that I will uphold the Constitution and the laws.”
The retirement age for the Chief Justice of India is 65, the same as for all Supreme Court judges, who retire upon reaching that age.
The salary of the Chief Justice of India is Rs 2.8 lakh per month. Other Supreme Court judges receive Rs 2.5 lakh, as do judges of all High Courts. Additionally, High Court judges other than the Chief Justice receive Rs 2.25 lakh per month.
