New Delhi (May 6): The Supreme Court of India has asked the National Medical Commission (NMC) to reply to a legal plea that claims some foreign medical graduates were not given their internship stipend by a medical college in Bhopal.

These students are doing their internship at the Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences, which is located in Madhya Pradesh.

The case was heard by a bench of two Supreme Court judges – Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice K Vinod Chandran.

During the hearing, lawyer Tanvi Dubey appeared on behalf of the affected students. One of the students named in the petition is MBBS graduate Akash Udayakumar.

The lawyer argued that the medical college did not pay any stipend to the students during their internship, even though they are working as part of their training.

The Supreme Court took note of these claims and has now issued a formal notice to the Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences.

This means that the college must respond to the allegations made by the students.

The court has also asked the National Medical Commission (NMC), which regulates medical education and standards in India, to give its reply on the matter.

The bench listened to advocate Tanvi Dubey’s arguments, where she told the court that the foreign medical graduates, who have completed their MBBS degrees abroad and are now undergoing internships in India as required by the NMC, have not been paid any stipend by the Bhopal-based medical college.

The Supreme Court said it would hear the matter again in the month of July.

This case raises an important question about whether medical colleges in India are following proper rules when it comes to internships for foreign medical graduates.

It also highlights the growing concern over fair treatment and financial support for such students, who often spend years studying abroad and come back to India to complete their qualifications.

The case will be closely watched, especially by foreign medical graduates and medical institutions across the country, as it could set an important legal precedent regarding payment of stipends during internships.
