A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Prime Minister Narendra Modi from offering a ceremonial chadar at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. The plea relates to the 814th Urs of Sufi saint Khwaja Chisti.

A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court, requesting a restriction on Prime Minister Narendra Modi from offering a ceremonial chadar at the tomb of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti during the 814th annual Urs at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah.
As per media reports, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju is set to present the chadar on behalf of Prime Minister Modi.
The request for an urgent hearing was brought before a vacation bench consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.
A counsel stated,
“We are seeking to stay the offering of the chadar in Ajmer Dargah by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Our plea regarding Sankat Mochan Mandir there is pending,”
However, CJI Kant rejected the appeal, stating,
“No listing today.”
The practice of offering a chadar at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah has been a long-standing tradition upheld by previous Prime Ministers.
Earlier this year, a similar petition was filed in an Ajmer court by Vishnu Gupta, then President of Hindu Sena. This lawsuit contended that the Ajmer Sharif Dargah is situated on the ruins of a destroyed Shiva temple.
Gupta argued that by sending a chadar to a “disputed structure,” the Central government is compromising judicial independence and the right to a fair trial, especially while a related case is still open in the trial court.
