The Supreme Court dismissed a public interest litigation that sought a nationwide ban on the construction of or naming any mosque after Babur or the “Babri Masjid.”

Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta chose not to entertain the petition.

During the proceedings, the petitioner’s counsel argued against the construction or naming of mosques after Babur, labeling him an “invader.”

It was also claimed that Babur referred to Hindus as slaves, urging that actions be taken against individuals allegedly participating in such naming activities.

The council addressed the declaration made by suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir about plans to build a replica of the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district, West Bengal.

The petition requested that the Centre and state authorities consider measures to prevent or prohibit the construction, establishment, or naming of any mosque or religious structure associated with Babur, Babri Masjid, or any related names throughout India.
