NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday came down heavily on Md Joynal Abedin, a professor from Gossaigaon College in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, who was arrested for posting anti-India and obscene content on social media.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi refused to grant interim bail to Abedin, calling him a “perverted man” and a “threat to young girls.” The court observed that Abedin’s behavior online was unacceptable for an educator and described him as a “shame to the word professor.”
“You are in the habit of harassing women on social media and making obscene remarks,” the bench remarked while hearing the bail plea. You are a perverted man and a threat to young girls in college. What kind of professor are you? You should not be allowed to enter the college.”
The bench reviewed Abedin’s social media posts and said they contained “shocking and filthy” language.
“He is of a dirty mind and a threat to society,”
the judges noted.
Defense Plea
Counsel for the petitioner argued that Abedin had apologised and deleted his anti-India post after realizing his mistake. The lawyer added that the chargesheet has been filed, but the trial could not begin as there has been no judicial officer in the Gossaigaon court for around six months.
“The court can impose any condition, and he will abide by it. Please grant him bail,”
the counsel pleaded, adding that the professor had already lost his job following the controversy.

Assam Government’s Stand
The Assam government’s counsel opposed the bail plea, claiming that Abedin was a habitual offender known for posting offensive and obscene content on social media platforms. The bench, after reviewing his online activity, expressed shock over his repeated misconduct.
The Supreme Court directed the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to look into the issue of the vacant judicial position in Gossaigaon and either appoint a judge there or transfer the case to the sessions court in Kokrajhar district.
“We will look into the possibility of interim bail later,”
the bench said, while keeping the matter pending.
Background of the Case
Md Joynal Abedin, a resident of Gossaigaon, was arrested on May 16 after allegedly making anti-national and obscene posts on social media. He was initially detained but later formally arrested following public outrage and complaints from local groups.
