The Supreme Court has introduced reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in staff recruitment, following its earlier move to implement quotas for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in hiring and promotions.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court expanded its reservation policy to include Other Backward Classes (OBC), in addition to the existing provisions for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in staff recruitment.
The new policy also extends to physically challenged individuals, ex-servicemen, and the dependents of freedom fighters.

Earlier, On July 4, a notification was issued regarding this implementation. Utilizing the authority granted under Clause (2) of Article 146 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice of India amended the Supreme Court Officers and Servants (Conditions of Service and Conduct) Rules, 1961.
For the first time, reservation for OBCs in Supreme Court recruitment has been introduced, following the earlier decision to include quotas for SC and ST.
The new reservation framework includes:
- Scheduled Castes (SC)
- Scheduled Tribes (ST)
- Other Backward Classes (OBC)
- Physically Challenged Persons
- Ex-servicemen
- Dependents of Freedom Fighters

The reservation will be executed according to the rules, orders, and notifications issued by the Government of India over time.
The same reservation policy will apply to any post within the Supreme Court, aligned with the prescribed pay scale for that position.
However, the Chief Justice of India holds the authority to make amendments, modifications, or exceptions to this policy as necessary.

Recently, the Supreme Court officially established a reservation policy for the recruitment and promotion of its SC and ST employees, allocating a 15% quota for SC candidates and a 7.5% quota for ST candidates in both direct recruitment and promotions.
The quota will apply to various positions, including registrars, senior personal assistants, assistant librarians, junior court assistants, and chamber attendants.
