Today, On 24th April, The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to a convict in the Nitish Katara murder case until May 8. The bail was allowed so he could visit and take care of his sick mother.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court granted interim bail until May 8 to Vikas Yadav, who is serving a 25-year sentence for his role in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, allowing him to visit his ill mother.
A bench consisting of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan ordered that Yadav’s mother be assessed by a medical board from AIIMS.
Yadav, convicted in the 2002 murder case, requested interim bail to care for his sick mother.
The court imposed several conditions, including that Yadav must remain confined to his residence in Ghaziabad and refrain from contacting witnesses in the case, notably Neelam Katara, the mother of the victim.
The court approved his bail on the condition that he deposits a bail bond of Rs. 1 lakh along with a surety of the same amount.
Vikas is the son of Uttar Pradesh politician D. P. Yadav. His cousin, Vishal Yadav, also received a sentence for the kidnapping and murder of business executive Nitish Katara. The two were opposed to Katara’s alleged relationship with Bharti Yadav, Vikas’s sister, due to their differing castes. Another co-convict, Sukhdev Pehalwan, was sentenced to 20 years in prison without the possibility of remission.
In his interim bail application, Yadav stated that his mother, Umesh Yadav, was critically ill and hospitalized in the ICU. The treating doctors recommended immediate surgical intervention due to her serious condition.
The plea stated,
“Due to the serious condition of the petitioner’s mother, his assistance and presence is needed,”
The Supreme Court sentenced Yadav, On October 3, 2016, without the benefit of remission.

Pehalwan was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Last year, the Delhi prison administration denied Yadav’s request for remission after finding his behavior unsatisfactory.
