Today, On 28th January, The Supreme Court has extended the tenure of the Justice Gita Mittal Committee overseeing relief and rehabilitation for victims of ethnic violence in Manipur. The extension till July 31 aims to ensure continued monitoring of support efforts there.

The Supreme Court extended the tenure of the Justice Gita Mittal committee, which was established to oversee relief and rehabilitation efforts for victims of ethnic violence in Manipur, until July 31.

The decision was made by a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, after they learned that the committee’s tenure had officially ended in July of last year.

The court was informed that the committee had submitted 42 reports regarding various aspects of victim rehabilitation.

CJI Kant stated,

“Since no formal extension was granted since July 2025, the continuation of the committee shall be regularised and is granted time till July 31, 2026.”

Originally formed on August 7, 2023, in response to distressing footage showing women being paraded naked in the state, the three-member committee consists of former women high court judges.

In addition to Justice Mittal, the panel includes retired Justices Shalini P Joshi from the Bombay High Court and Asha Menon from the Delhi High Court.

The committee was tasked not only with overseeing the relief and rehabilitation efforts but also with providing compensation to victims.

Additionally, former Maharashtra police chief Dattatray Padsalgikar was appointed to monitor investigations into related criminal cases.

The Supreme Court is currently overseeing matters related to the ethnic violence, which has resulted in over 200 fatalities, numerous injuries, and the displacement of thousands since the unrest began on May 3, 2023, during a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ protesting the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
