The Chief Justice remarked, “You are highly educated, yet unemployed. You should find a job for yourself.”

NEW DELHI: During a hearing on a petition to transfer a matrimonial dispute, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud suggested that the couple consider divorce by mutual consent, noting that a prolonged legal battle would primarily benefit the lawyers.
The Chief Justice inquired about the woman’s educational background, to which she responded that she holds an MTech and a PhD from a university in the United States. When asked about her current employment, the woman said she was not working.

The Chief Justice remarked,
“You are highly educated, yet unemployed. You should find a job for yourself.”
Advising her to consider a mutual consent divorce, the Chief Justice remarked,
“You could spend 10 years fighting this case. It will drag on for a decade, and only the lawyers will benefit. Why not be reasonable and settle the matter with a mutual consent divorce? Otherwise, criminal complaints and other issues may arise. If you both agree, we can close these cases.”
The Chief Justice further added,
“It’s clear you can’t reconcile. If you were uneducated, it might be different, but you’re both highly qualified and capable of finding jobs.”
