NEW DELHI: Justice Joymalya Bagchi, who is currently a judge at the Calcutta High Court, will take the oath as a Supreme Court judge on Monday.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna will conduct the oath-taking ceremony for Justice Bagchi at the Supreme Court. Other Supreme Court judges will also be present at this important event.

After Justice Bagchi is sworn in, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court will be 33, while the sanctioned strength is 34.

Justice Bagchi will serve as a Supreme Court judge for over six years. During this period, he will also become the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Born on October 3, 1966, Justice Bagchi is set to take over as CJI after the retirement of Justice KV Viswanathan on May 25, 2031. His tenure as the Chief Justice of India will continue until October 2, 2031, the day before his retirement.

The central government approved Justice Bagchi’s name for appointment to the Supreme Court on March 10.

Earlier, on March 6, a five-member collegium, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, had recommended his name for the position of Supreme Court judge.

The collegium included Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Abhay S Oka, and Justice Vikram Nath. They noted that no judge from the Calcutta High Court had become the Chief Justice of India since Justice Altamas Kabir, who retired on July 18, 2013.

Justice Bagchi began his journey as a judge in the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. Later, on January 4, 2021, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

However, he returned to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021, where he continued serving as a judge.

With more than 13 years of experience as a High Court judge, Justice Bagchi holds the 11th position in the combined all-India seniority list of High Court judges, including Chief Justices.

Throughout his long career, he has gained extensive knowledge and expertise in various fields of law.
