NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting on March 24, 2026, approved recommendations to elevate several Additional Judges to Permanent Judgeships in the High Courts of Chhattisgarh and Madras. The decisions, announced via official statements, are a key step toward strengthening the judicial benches of these two prominent High Courts.

Chhattisgarh High Court appointments: The Collegium cleared the confirmation of five Additional Judges as Permanent Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court. The judges recommended for permanency are:

  • Shri Justice Sachin Singh Rajput
  • Shri Justice Radhakishan Agrawal
  • Shri Justice Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal
  • Shri Justice Bibhu Datta Guru
  • Shri Justice Amitendra Kishore Prasad

Madras High Court appointments: In the same sitting, the Collegium also recommended making three Additional Judges of the Madras High Court permanent. The names forwarded are:

  • Ms. Justice R. Poornima
  • Shri Justice M. Jothiraman
  • Dr. (Smt.) Justice Augustine Devadoss Maria Clete

The process of Appointment

The conversion of Additional Judges to Permanent Judges follows the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP). Additional Judges are generally appointed for a two-year term. Before that term ends, the respective High Court Collegium assesses their performance and forwards recommendations to the Supreme Court Collegium for permanency.

The Supreme Court Collegium composed of the Chief Justice of India and the senior-most judges evaluates such proposals on grounds of judicial competence, integrity, and reported judgments. After Collegium approval, recommendations are transmitted to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for further action, culminating in the President of India issuing formal warrants of appointment.

These confirmations are expected to bolster the strength and stability of the Chhattisgarh and Madras benches, helping expedite case disposal and reduce pending backlogs.
