Justice Vikram Nath made a light-hearted remark in court after Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal narrated how a High Court ignored the Supreme Court’s stay, saying, “He’s a practical judge, knows nothing happens in Supreme Court,” sparking laughter in the courtroom.

During a brief mention before a Supreme Court bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal narrated how the High Court had decided to continue hearing a matter despite the Supreme Court’s stay order, citing delays in the top court.

Sibal told the bench,

“Your lordships grants stay. Then your lordships didn’t sit, the matter didn’t reach. The High Court says the Supreme Court keeps adjourning the endlessly, the petition will become infructuous, therefore I’ll continue to hear the matter.”

Justice Vikram Nath, amused by the observation, asked,

“That’s what the High Court said?”

To this, Sibal replied,

“Yes! Just see the order.”

Justice Nath then remarked with humour,

“That’s the right view! He’s a practical judge. He knows nothing happens in Supreme Court.”

Justice Sandeep Mehta added,

“Technically the judge is right.”

Responding to the bench, Sibal explained,

“There was a constitution bench so what can we do.”

After the exchange, the bench directed that the matter be listed in the first week of November.
